1st generation has the marketing name, printed on inlay in base next to right display hinges, and a MODEL identifier in Battery bay.
2nd generation ... unsure. A photo showing "MODEL PGC-XXXXX" in Battery bay is likely to be taken from a sample, because on Battery displayed in same photo series there is inscription "NOT FOR SALE".
The 1st gen disassembly photos available at some Japanese website (e.g. file l_tm_0901pmb_03.jpg) clearly show a special machine. In Battery bay, there is printing at bottom line of a large white label: "NOT FOR SALE" and on Battery next to it, on inner side, "SONY SAMPLE". Printing on inlay is "VGN-xxxx".
At least the following 1st gen MODEL exist. The MODEL identifier is inside the device, below the Battery.
Looks like SONY Viet Nam (.vn) knows at least, beside P23G: VGN-P33GK, VGN-P33TK, VGN-P35GK, VGN-P35MK, VGN-P35TK. Need someone familiar with Vietnamese language to interpret specs.
